Objective: Ectopic pregnancy is one of the major health problem among women of childbearing age. It cause major maternal morbidity and mortality with pregnancy loss and its incidence is increasing worldwide. The purpose of this
study is to determine the risk factors for ectopic pregnancy.
Materials and methods: A case-control study was performed with 85 patients and 200 controls hospitalized in the
Bucheon Hospital of Soonchunhyang University during January 2004 to August 2005. Data were analyzed by using
logistic regression.
Result: Thirty to 40 years old pregnancy (OR=2.4), unmarried status (OR=17.1), more than 3 gravida (OR=48.3),
and an early sexual debut (OR=1.8) increased the risk of ectopic pregnancy. History of multiple lifetime sexual
partners, abortions, pelvic inflammatory disease, previous pelvic surgery also increased the risk of ectopic pregnancy.
Whereas married status (OR=0.1), a late sexual debut (OR=0.7) decreased the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Socioeconomic
status was not the significant risk factor, too.
Conclusion: The risk factors of ectopic pregnancy was affected by age, marrital status, number of gravida, the age of sexual debut, the number of sexual partners, and experience of abortions, pelvic inflammatory disease, and previous pelvic surgery.
